Today the Supreme Court of the United States heard arguments in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission which focuses on whether the state of Colorado can force baker Jack Phillips to express his support of a same-sex wedding through his bakery. Jack is a Christian, and while he sold countless cakes to LGBT people, he felt he could not take part in a religious ceremony that violated his Christian beliefs.
The case, argued by Kristen Waggoner (Regent Law 1997), Senior Vice President of U.S. Legal Advocacy & General Counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom, is about marriage, religious freedom and most of all free expression. The High Court will consider the implications of their 2015 decision to expand marriage in Obergefell in light of the First Amendment. The Unspoken Consequences of Obergefell have dramatically affected how people can think about families based on their own personal faith and biblical principles when states impose mandates upon them for speech and expression, as Colorado has done to Jack Phillips. Family restoration requires freedom of speech, conscience, and religion and this case could be a game-changer for it all.
