Arranged Marriages and Society’s Historic Attitudes Toward Women

This guest post is from Catherine McFarland, Regent Law 2L and current Family Law student:

Beliefs are powerful things. They affect our decision making—and our treatment of others. Historically, Western society had a low view of women. Women were considered inferior. In a marriage, the couple was considered one person, and that person was the man.

Historically, couples were brought together by matchmaking, or an arranged marriage. Young men and women were selected mates by their families. Because of women’s lesser power in society, she had less say than her male counterpart in the proposed marriage. Especially in wealthy families, parents exercised a great deal of control over their children’s marriage. Parents wanted to have a say in who their future family would be. Money, prestige, and family honor were considerations when choosing their children’s mate.

According to the Bible, “as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7) Galatians 3:28 states that men and women are equal: we are the same in Christ. Possessing biblical beliefs about the other gender is critically important, and can protect otherwise vulnerable family members.
