"Freedom of Choice Act" Could Mean Limitless Abortions

Presidential candidate Barack Obama has stated that he would make signing the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), H.R. 1964 and S. 1173 his first action as president. In fact, with so much attention on the economy, one area of federal legislation that can be overlooked is abortion. FOCA is an old and dangerous bill that will increase abortions by an enormous amount, is being resurrected by a key abortion advocate - a 2008 presidential candidate.

FOCA is usually reported as codifying Roe v. Wade, but it is much more. Since the Webster and Casey decisions in 1989 and 1992, the Supreme Court has allowed states to regulate and limit abortion somewhat by such things as requiring parental involvement and informed consent, to prohibit government funding of most abortion, and more recently outlawing most partial birth abortions. The FOCA, however, tolerates none of this. Advocates and opponents of FOCA
all agree that the bill would nullify every legal limit on abortion, state, federal or otherwise.

If you’d like to read more about this concern, read the LifeNews article by Steve Ertelt at:
http://www.LifeNews.com/nat4359.html.

Abortion should not be the first attention a child receives from his or her parents – mothers (and fathers) are responsible for the protection of their children. A federal act that would take all limits and regulations off the abortion decision would clearly not be good for children; it would not be good for women; and it would not be good for families in any way whatsoever. While singlehandedly sweeping away states’ rights to regulate abortion, the Freedom of Choice Act would be a costly and ugly scourge on the U.S. presidency, and a devastation to family restoration.

UPDATE 10.7.08 FROM FRC'S GRASSROOTS ALERT

Watch Our New Video and Urge Senator Obama to Protect Babies' Rights
October 7, 2008  |  Refer a Friend

Senator Barack Obama (D-Ill.) voted repeatedly to deny the unborn and survivors of abortion their basic rights. Four times as an Illinois legislator, he voted against laws that would have ensured equal medical care for babies that survive an abortion attempt. This "Born Alive Infant Protection" legislation was adopted by the U.S. Senate 98-0. But it was not good enough for Senator Obama.

Watch our new video here and see the details of these votes.

Senator Obama is also the leading supporter of legislation, called FOCA, which would make partial-birth abortion legal again, repeal all parental notice laws on abortion, and provide unlimited tax funding of abortion. For most Americans, these issues are settled. Not for Senator Obama.

Please watch our video now and call Senator Obama's office at 202-224-2854. Tell him to support babies' basic rights.

Thank you for taking action today and God bless you.

Sincerely,
 Tony Perkins
President

P.S. Please forward this video to friends and family everywhere. We need Senator Obama to hear loud and clear that babies have rights, too.
