Families Ought to be the Best Protectors for Seniors

Strong families protect and respect their senior relatives throughout age and incapacitation. One way to do so is to provide for a durable power of attorney to allow a trusted agent to take care of the various financial, medical and personal needs of the senior family member. When an agent abuses that trust, families are the best people to step in on behalf of the senior, even if the agent is a family member also.

Ashby L. Pope, Regent Law 2010, has written an excellent article for attorneys and family members to consider when providing for the needs of an elderly relative with a durable power of attorney. Her thesis includes the concepts noted here, and the article provides a how to for protecting senior loved ones. You may view her excellent power point presentation below:

Entitled "Stealing From Grandpa? – How the Attorney Can Combat the Abuse of a Valid Power of Attorney for His Elderly or Incapacitated Client," you may read the entire article here.
