Beware of this Deadly TikTok Challenge

Have you heard of the TikTok Benadryl Challenge?  Beware, because this social media craze is truly deadly.  The level of recklessness and irresponsibility that should be but has not been attributed to TikTok is alarming.

Last week a teen girl in Oklahoma died after taking the TikTok Benadryl Challenge.  The ‘Benadryl challenge’ is a new game in which teens on TikTok are encouraged and dared to take as much allergy medicine as needed in order to hallucinate or experience a mental and emotional high.  The Oklahoma victim was not an atypical kid, but she was described as a happy and ‘faith-driven’ teen who was not known to experiment with drugs, as Oklahoma City’s KFOR-TV reported.

The dose that can cause a hallucination is very close to the dose that can cause several life-threatening reactions, as overdosing on Benadryl leaves one vulnerable to heart attack, stroke, seizures, brain damage, and even death.  Any parent knows the strength of just one Benadryl, which can be helpful, but is always cautious of its power.  In May, three teens from Fort Worth, Texas were hospitalized after they swallowed excessive doses of Benadryl as part of the ‘challenge.’

Parents, please talk with your kids.  And kids, alert your parents.  This is not something to mess around with.  Rather, prevent this tragedy from happening in any family or especially to someone you love.  Social media crazes should not destroy families or the lives of children.
