The “largely invisible crisis of Western paternity” is becoming more significant to American life, law and culture every day. This is the crisis of fatherlessness.
In her piece entitled “The Fury of the
Fatherless,” Mary Eberstadt writes for First Things in December of
2020 that “what is happening in America is an excruciatingly painful truth that
life without father, Father, and filial piety toward country are not… socially
neutral options…” Connecting the results of a child’s life without a father
anchor with current events in America, Eberstadt clarifies that children need families
with a dad. Resentment for those who
have a strong and helpful father or father figure may drive bad behavior for
those who have not had that healthy mooring.
Understanding this father wound
can be really important to help someone begin to move toward healing.
The more we know, the better we can understand this phenomenon,
and the more helpful we can be in advancing family restoration. Fathers really are important – to kids, to
culture, to the law, and to family restoration.
