How can Christians adhere to marriage as between one man and one woman for a lifetime when there are so many other options? And how can Christians really believe there are only two genders, male and female, when Facebook recognizes as many as 60? And why are Christians so intolerant about birthing persons, thinking them instead to be mommies? And worst of all, why do Christians seem so intolerant about sexuality? And why do Christians think the only context for sexual expression is marriage? Why indeed are Christians so close minded and intolerant about all these things? These are some of the questions we considered in University Chapel last week, as I presented A Christian Understanding of Sexual Equality, Sexuality, & Identity. You can see and hear that presentation here at Regent Video Player.
Considering why Christians seem so
intolerant on these issues, we looked at three specific points, and demonstrated
how these very aspects of our faith as believers that make us seem so
intolerant are also the very same truths that will make us empathetic,
sensitive, and understanding in relation to the world, and to our neighbor.
Jesus Christ and a
personal relationship with Him is the solution – He is always the right answer.
So can we still believe in God when Christians are so
intolerant? A biblical view of gender
equality and sexuality is no barrier to loving others, or to belief in
God. Rather, I argue it is the very
pointer to authentic belief in the Almighty God, the Lord Jesus Christ. And instead of these issues creating a sense
of intolerance, they are the very truths to increase our sensitivity, our
empathy, and our ability to love people toward the gospel, and lead them to the
Lord Almighty, Jesus Christ. This is personal
restoration. This is family restoration.
As Dietrich Bonhoeffer so aptly stated, “God calls us in
history to enter – not escape – the drama of this world.”
