Another Child Star Conservatorship

This guest post is courtesy of Regent Law 3L and current Family Law student Rebekah Bunch:

The world is likely very familiar with conservatorships now, especially since social media erupted with support for the end of Britney Spears’ conservatorship with the #FreeBritney movement last year. Britney’s conservatorship came to an end in November 2021.

Now, another child star is seeking to end their conservatorship. Amanda Bynes, most popularly known for her role in The Amanda Show and She’s the Man, was placed under a conservatorship in 2013 after she “allegedly set a driveway on fire and was hospitalized on an involuntary psychiatric hold.” The conservatorship is controlled by her mother, Lynn Organ. Amanda has formally petitioned to end her conservatorship because she believes her condition has improved and there is no further court protection needed. She will have a hearing on March 22, 2022. The difference between Amanda and Britney? Amanda’s parents fully support the conservatorship coming to an end. In fact, throughout her conservatorship, none of Amanda’s individual rights and freedom were taken from her, unlike Britney.

Hopefully, Amanda will be released from the legal constraints of her conservatorship soon because she and her family believe it is in her best interests, and will restore her family.
