Reconciliation: A Look into One of Hollywood’s Most Iconic Marriages

This guest post is from Regent Law 2L and current Family Law student Seth Craig:

In 1997, Will Smith walked Jada Pinkett Smith down the aisle of marriage. The couple’s marriage quickly became a role model for matrimony among celebrities, often dealing with marital drama out of the limelight. However, in 2013, Jada commented on her marriage in a Huff Post interview, “…[A]t the end of the day, Will is his own man. I’m here as his partner, but he is his own man.” Unfortunately, this comment started rumors that the Smiths were in an open marriage and that divorce was on the horizon.

In 2015, Will took to these rumors about his marriage head-on and posted a status on Facebook, “In the interest of redundant, repetitious, over & over-again-ness...Jada and I are...NOT GETTING A DIVORCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!” However, during a 2020 interview on Red Table Talk, Jada affirmed that she had an affair in 2016 with R&B singer August Alsina while she and Will were separated. During this separate period, there were rumors that Will was involved with model Heidy De la Rosa.

The Smiths are ultimately reconciled, have “no secrets,” and share “unconditional love.” “We came together young, and we were both broken in our own ways, and to be able to make mistakes without the fear of losing your family is so critical,” Will said.

Will has been publicly against divorce, stating in an interview that divorce “was not an option” for him and Jada. “…I had been divorced before, [I’m not] getting divorced again.” Ever since, Will and Jada have been candid about their marriage and the challenge of raising their two children, Jaden and Willow Smith.

Hollywood couples are people too, with flaws and all. Despite the steady rate of marriages ending in divorce, the American judicial system resumes promoting its interest in marriage through contract law. If Will and Jada are truly sincere about reconciling their marriage and resolving their differences, a family law attorney may provide legal assistance that helps clients resolve differences while rebuilding trust previously lost in the union.

A reconciliation agreement is a legal writing that is generally upheld by courts of law. Individuals like Will and Jada who are in the midst of a marital struggle would benefit from seeking counsel from a family law attorney who understands reconciliation in the age of divorce.
