Will the Divorce Rate Increase in 2024?

This guest post is from Regent Law graduate & Family Law student, Kelly Aeschlimann:

On March 9, 2023, ABC News updated their list of who is running for president in 2024 and other potential candidates who have not confirmed their intentions. News channels have been speculating and commenting heavily on one Republican candidate who announced his bid for candidacy on November 15, 2022. The big question is whether divorce rates will increase in 2024 based on the upcoming election?

An article published by the Family Lawyer Magazine on December 5, 2022, addressed the issue of whether divorce is now driven by political indifferences between spouses. After the 2016 election, family law attorneys reported a new basis seen by clients for divorce: political strife. In 2017, a study by Wakefield Research reported that a third of married people said they would get a divorce if their spouse voted for a specific candidate…Mr. Donald Trump. Twenty-nine percent said their political indifferences had a negative impact for their relationship, causing roughly eleven percent of couples to end their relationships. One of the most memorable examples is Gayle McCormick, a California resident who divorced her husband after twenty-two years of marriage because he voted for Trump in the 2016 election.

There continues to be a general concern that the divorce rate will again be affected by political disagreements between spouses, especially among younger generations. More than one-fifth of Millennials ended their relationship due to political differences. And nearly thirty-five percent of Millennials know of someone whose marriage or relationship was negatively impacted by the 2016 election.

Law Firm Goldberg Jones, says it best: “If you and your spouse have political disagreements, whether that leads to divorce depends on you. . . . focus on the values you share instead of those you don’t.”

Ideally, pray for one another, and pray together to build and maintain a strong foundation in the Lord. Ephesians 5:33 reminds all of God's children that “Each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” When a marriage or relationship is confronted with adversity, do not give up at the first sight of conflict but rather seek sound advice to make you two stronger!
