Families are concerned about health care, its costs, the federal mandate, and how it will impact their loved ones. They are also considering how congressional representatives have spoken for – or against - their constituents. Forcing families to pay for procedures and services that harm women and children has been a major concern.
Alliance Defense Fund litigator Matt Bowman expresses some grave concern over the validity of President Obama’s executive order against abortion funding. “Some members of Congress say that they voted for the health reform law because the President’s executive order directs Health and Human Services, in some narrow ways but not in others, to refrain from spending federal money on abortion. Pro-lifers instead contend–and abortion advocates agree –that the order does not and cannot change the statute’s approach to abortion funding.
In one particularly disputed clause, the order directs HHS not to disperse $11 Billion in “community health center” funds for abortion, even though the statute directs those funds to include comprehensive Ob/Gyn care while containing no restriction that the money not fund abortion. The funding is so massive that it could give away every abortion in America for free for 18 years.” Read the entire article at: http://www.alliancealert.org/wordpress/2010/03/26/matt-bowman-new-federal-court-ruling-demonstrates-folly-of-presidents-order-restricting-funds-for-abortion/.

Furthermore, in light of this expansive Health Care Reform, the Federalist Society has commenced a New Federal Initiatives Project brought to you by the Administrative Law & Regulation Practice Group. Concerns that families might have certainly encompass abortion funding as we have noted here before, but they also might include individual mandates, constitutionality of the reforms, legality of reforms, patient protection and doctor freedom in the practice of medicine. Below are links to several articles, white papers, and letters that examine the legal and constitutional questions raised by the current reforms. Also available in links below are the healthcare reform bill as passed, and other documents on healthcare reform. Related Links include:
Protect your family by being informed, and making your congressional representatives aware of your concerns for your family, and for the women and children who will be harmed by new federal health care mandates.

The health care reform bill is poor policy for a number of different reasons, not least of which the economic impact it will have on the fisc and the intrusion of the government into our everyday life. However, the largest problem is the abortion dilemma. An executive order can be taken back at any time without reservation and an executive order is always trumped by statutory law. I am interested to see what ends up happening with these "health centers." One of my concerns is that they will end up in poor communities, as to expose the most vulnerable of our country to on demand abortions. I think we have a duty to follow up on this legislation and do our part to fight this battle. In a few months, or even years, this topic will not be as hot as it is now; we cannot let that impact us and our investigations.
ReplyDeleteThe abortion issue is probably the biggest problem I have with the Healtcare bill. As a proud Catholic, my fear is that the government will attempt to require Catholic hospitals to peform abortions, which, of course, they will not do.
ReplyDeleteEven for those who are pro-choice, it is easy to see the far reaching effects here. If people claim to be worried about access to healthcare NOW, lets see what happens when Catholic hospitals are no longer in business.
I agree J.D. I can't believe some of these so called "blue dog" democrats were so naive as to be satisfied by this executive order. They claim to be pro life, but if they were truly pro life, then I don't see how they could possibly believe that this order was sufficient to remove abortions from the health care plan.
