Need a Lawyer?

This guest post is from Summer Crump, Regent Law 2L and current Family Law student:

Do you find you need legal guidance and advice?  Have you thought of contacting a Christian lawyer?  While lawyers may refuse to represent clients for moral or ethical reasons, lawyers also recognize a duty to clients that extends beyond personal values. The Christian lawyer can consider embracing the advantage of providing, not only legal counseling, but also spiritual support. By choosing this  sort of representation, the opportunity to counsel a client on the moral and religious ramifications of proceeding with difficult and challenging circumstances can become very real, and very helpful. God can use the Christian lawyer in ways no other profession can address.   Matthew 11:28-29 proclaims: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

The opportunity is bestowed upon the Christian lawyer to pray with a potential client for God to provide strength and guidance in their decision making during this difficult time, and for the client and his or her family to find peace with God in a personal relationship with Him. Scripture may be useful when extending spiritual comfort to a client under difficult or challenging circumstances:

Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Philippians 4:6-7: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Jeremiah 29:11-13: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

Corinthians 15:42-44: So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

Isaiah 40:31: But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

John 14:27: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

And, lastly, Revelation 21:4: He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.

The lawyer’s role and demeanor may indirectly influence a potential client’s decision and direct him or her towards the path of righteousness without any expression of judgment. A person’s moral conscience is personal to the individual possessing those values, however, sometimes our profession’s bylaws and expectations may require us to perform duties we may not find desirable. Lawyers are provided the advantage of seizing the opportunity to proffer moral support and spiritual comfort by representing a client facing really tough circumstances, from family breakdown to life and death.

If you or someone in your family needs legal representation, find a lawyer who can listen, value, and serve you in the best path through the valley.  Christian lawyers can be used by God to change the world for you.
